Obituary of Gloria Helen Whalen

After a long and courageous battle with cancer, the death occurred Monday, March 13, 2023 at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, with her husband by her side, of Gloria Helen Margaret Whalen of Avondale, age 52 years.  

 

Gloria is survived by her husband Donald Campbell, their three children Tara, John and Kate Campbell, her parents James and Ronalda (MacDonald) Whalen and her seven brothers John (Nancy) Ottawa, Ontario; Robert (Elizabeth) Indianapolis, USA; Michael (Julie) Orton, Ontario; James Jr. (Janice) Avondale, PEI; Leonard (Pamela) Avondale, PEI; Ronald (Tracey) Hermitage PEI and Steven, Quebec.  Gloria will be missed by her favorite aunts and uncles Edna and Jamie MacLean, Cyril and Gloria Chapman, Augustus and Don Harriman, Ita MacDonald, Sheila MacDonald, Marie MacDonald, Richardema Whalen; her father-in-law and mother-in-law George and Linda Campbell and brother-in-law Stephen Campbell (Beth).   Gloria leaves fond memories among her 15 nieces, 7 nephews and cousins whom she loved. 

 

Gloria was born in the Charlottetown Hospital on August 22, 1970 and attended school at Vernon River Consolidated and high school in Montague, PEI.  She received a Bsc from St. FX University and a Master’s degree from Mount St Vincent.  During her many years as a physical instructor, she worked with many young athletes at Belfast Consolidated and West Royalty Elementary School and was always on the bench to support their efforts and successes.  Her skill as an athlete was evident in several sports including speedskating, volleyball, soccer, basketball and hockey.  Gloria has many close friends from her teaching career and from the sports where she participated.  Her strong faith was evident in how she approached her illness.  A member of the St. Joachim’s Catholic Women’s League, she was always ready to help when available.  During the many years Gloria was receiving treatment, she often spoke of the wonderful care she received from the doctors, nurses and all of the support staff at the PEI Cancer Treatment Centre of the QEH. 

 

Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home from where visiting hours will be held Friday, March 17, 2023 4-7 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be celebrated on Saturday at 10:30 am from St. Joachim’s Church, Vernon River.  Interment will take place later at the parish cemetery.
