Sincere condolences from me and my family to all the Mutch family.
I got to know Ernest in the fall of 1993 when I read that he would be taking an old school bus to Guatemala; I had just got my bus driving license so I offered to help drive. Ernest soon gave me all the details of the plan to deliver the bus to the CEIPA project for street children in Xela, Guatemala, and he got me involved right away with helping him and Gabino Penalver to fix up the bus.
We left PEI Jan. 6, 1994 along with Sarah Arnold, and Ricky and Gerrit Loo (3 others joined us later on). The wind chill that day was -45' but the bus ran fine and away we went.
Ernest had hurt his back just before we left but he didn't let that slow us down and he never complained. He took one of the seats out of the back of the bus and set it up across the aisle so he could lie down and keep us all entertained from there with his stories, teasing and banter.
We had a wonderful trip; the weather eventually warmed up around Virginia! And we eventually got to hot weather for swimming at the beach on the Gulf of Mexico!
The bus broke down a couple of times before we got to Xela, but guardian angels were watching over us, and Ernest quickly made the mechanical repairs to get us on the road again.
Ernest and others had to do some negotiations to get us across the border into Mexico, and through the military roadblocks in Chiapas. This was right at the time of the Zapatista uprising against the North American Free Trade Agreement in the state of Chiapas in Mexico, so there were some tense situations, but Ernest's good humour and patience always kept trouble from turning into a disaster!
It was such a privilege for me to join Ernest on that mission and journey that was an inspiring experience of a lifetime, one that I'll never forget.
I expect Ernest has joined the guardian angels and will continue to watch over and help us and many others.

To Aunt Marion and my cousins, what a beautiful send off for such a kind and wonderful man. I will always remember how much he loves his family and how patient he was with us as kids wanting to ride horses all day long. I’m so grateful I got the opportunity to visit for lunch a few summers ago. And although I’m sure he didn’t hear a word I said, he smiled and laughed and when offered two dessert options, replied yes please for both. The house looked the same as it always had which was so comforting, so many memories in that
Kitchen. He lived well, he loved well and he will be missed. Love to you all. XO

Ernest's heart encompassed a wide world of loving service, a love which did not discriminate between class or distinction of citizenship and religion. His legacy is in the encouragement he gave to each member of the communities he served wherever he happened to be at the time. He was relentless in finding a way through any adversity, his eyes sparking at the challenge and his grin wider at the resolution. I met Ernie through horses. He was as ready to repair a broken sleigh shaft as he was to offer a cuppa. To this day I follow the advice he gave me about organizing equipment: Always keep the spare parts near the place where you will need them. His own advice kept his workshop from burning down when the waste oil stove fire got away, but only briefly. I remember seeing him on his motorized bike which he built, his wide grin swallowing the wind he confronted. Careful to adjust the brakes on the vehicles he maintained with his Provincial Vocational Institute classes, he had no brakes on his heart. Thank you for your example, Ernie. RIP

Ernie had such a visceral sense of social justice, always thinking of ways he could help people less fortunate. He gave far more than he took, always helping. He was a very close friend of my father's, who I know will miss him immensely.
(He also gave me horseback riding lessons in the late 1980s.)
Best wishes.

I weep for our shared loss of a wonderful Dad/Uncle/man of God. He loved well. I pray for your/our comfort in this world before we are reunited in heaven. My prayers are for you in this difficult time.
Praise be to God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of compassion and the God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our troubles, so that we can comfort those in any trouble with the comfort we ourselves receive from God.

Dear Dorothy, Erma Jean and the family,
It has been very many years since I have had the pleasure of greeting you, yet I looked closely enough to the obituary to see that Ernest was your brother. In writing this condolence, the years melt away and I recall warmly when both of you spent time at our home when we were growing up.
May God's peace and joy be perceived by you in this time of loss.
Yours ever sincerely,
Reed

My deepest condolences to the family. Please allow me to share my personal tribute to Ernie.. Stella Shepard
PEI has lost one of its best with the recent passing of Ernie Mutch of Hazelbrook. Ernie was an amazing person with the biggest social justice heart for the lesser blessed. Ernie made several trips to worn-torn Guatemala with a school busload of supplies for street children projects, medical supplies, etc. I had the privilege on being on one his bus trips to Central America in the early 90s. The trip on an aged old school bus with a group of people travelling from PEI to Guatemala was one of the most amazing experiences I will never forget. And I witnessed firsthand his acts of goodness/kindness to the lesser blessed people of Central America. Ernie, a tradesperson, collected tools he took to CA to teach displaced/ street youth of Guatemala communities / necessary trade skills to give the youth a better future. Ernie was a very humbled man of honour/ and / the world is better place because of him. Rest my good friend, you were loved by many.
