Obituary of Joseph Byrne
Peacefully at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital, Charlottetown, on Monday, August 20, 2018, the death occurred of Joseph Byrne, of Hardy Mill Road, York, age 86 years. Beloved husband of Mary Byrne (nee Dunn). Loving father of Geraldine Parsons (Marvin) and Noreen Stymest (Anthony). Cherished Grandfather of A.J. Parsons (M.J.) and Matthew Stymest and Great-Grandfather of Dezmen and Weston Parsons. Joe will be missed by sisters - Eleanor Smith (Lornie - deceased) and Bernice Scott (Bill - deceased). He was predeceased by parents -Walter and Maisie (nee MacDonald) Byrne and brother Gerald Byrne.
Following a career in the transportation industry in Nova Scotia, Joe retired from Seaboard Liquid Carriers in 1992. He was subsequently honoured by Seaboard for his passionate approach to safety and leadership. In early retirement, he and Mary moved back to PEI where they built a home and welcomed family and friends from far and wide. Joe thoroughly enjoyed travelling and restoring antique autos. Visitors to his home in York were entertained by tours of his garage and by updates on his restoration projects. A great conversationalist, Joe loved to gather with his friends at the local coffee shops to talk about current events. His thirst for learning was shown by his large book collection and by his enjoyment in sharing those books with his friends.
Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home, 2 Hollis Ave., Stratford for visitation Wednesday, August 22, 2018, from 6-8 p.m. Funeral mass will be celebrated on Thursday, August 23, 2018 at St. Eugene’s Church, Covehead, at 10:00 a.m. Interment will follow at St. Eugene’s Cemetery. As an expression of sympathy, memorial donations to Pat and the Elephant would be appreciated.
