It was a pleasure to have known Richard. He was a great Islander and PEI is the beneficiary of his example and contributions to family and community. I feel fortunate to have known him over the years. Our sympathies to his family.

The summer we (mum, Blair, cousins John and Genevieve, and Auntie Betty) spent with you on the farm, was one of the most enjoyable and memorable experiences of my childhood. For this "big city" kid from Toronto, spending time with you getting dirty on the farm in the red PEI sand, was life-changing. I learned the sweet and sorrowful responsibilities of daily life on a mixed farm. From early sunrises and endless hours of playing outside to picking wild blueberries and strawberries which we made into jam. Feeding that summer’s litter of newborn kittens (Butterscotch Ripple) and your beautiful dog Skipo, gathering wildflowers to put on the table, and our evening trips on the hay wagon to feed to the cows. Witnessing the care your neighbours had for each other as the dropped by the house, to the sad reality of learning my pet pig Jeffrey, had been taken away to the slaughterhouse. I could go on.......
So, Uncle Richard, as the sunsets and you take your last drive, in your beautiful red truck, down your very long laneway with a big smile on your face to heaven’s gates, please know that you had a profound impact on me, and I love you very much. Darlene xo

We are saddened by the loss of our Great Uncle Richard, but know that he is now reunited with his late wife Lorraine & his sister, our Nan, Rose. Over the years, although we didn't see Richard often, we always remembered his visits at Nan & Pops when stopping in for a chat or when he & Lorraine would come over on Christmas evening for sweets & coffee/tea. One childhood memory we especially remember was when we spent some of our summers in Lakeside, and Nan & our great aunts Betty and Joan took us to visit his house on the farm. A new kitten adopted by Betty, came back with us to the summer home & continued to travel back many summers from BC! Sending our sincere condolences to the whole family ♡
Love,
Gillian & Kristin Doherty

Hi Richard
We are sorry we cannot attend your funeral tomorrow. We are planning to go home in July to visit your grave site to pay
our respects.
We remember all the good times working on the farm planting potatoes until dusk, picking strawberries and hoeing turnips, etc.
We also remember the one room schoolhouse with ten grades in one room - Bernadette MacKenzie was one of our teachers.
Xmas dinners with our cousins from Summerville made Xmas a very pleasant experience every year,
I left home when I was eighteen years old.
Our many visits to PEI included going up to the homestead with a bottle of rum to see you and talk about old times.
May you rest in peace dear Brother.
Love Joan
