Obituary of Ronald Frederick Rice

 

Ronald Frederick Rice, of Charlottetown Prince Edward Island, passed away on May 27, 2026, at the age of 82.

Ronald was born on December 4th, 1943, in Charlottetown, Prince Edward Island, to Hazel and Gordon Rice. Ronald lived his entire life on Prince Edward Island, except for a short appointment in Montreal in the early 1970s.

He enjoyed a long and meaningful career in education as a teacher and civil servant at the Prince Edward Island Department of Education where he was respected for his dedication, leadership, and commitment to the people and communities he served.  Ronald was also very proud of his accomplishments as Chairman of the Board of Governors of Holland College in the late 1970s.

A lifelong supporter and fan of sports, Ronald had a particular love for baseball. He served as President of Baseball Prince Edward Island helping grow the game of baseball on the Island.  He then served as President of Baseball Canada, a role that allowed him to travel the world and share his passion for the game. Among his many memorable experiences was representing Baseball Canada at the summer Olympics in Sydney, Australia.

Ronald was predeceased by his mother, Hazel Rice; his father, Gordon Rice; his sister, Norma Jean Colquhoun; and his first wife, Joan Rice.

He is survived by his wife, Katherine Morris; his children, Jamie Rice, Gordon Rice, and Jill Rice; his grandchildren, Simon McLean, Rowan Rice, Julien Carruthers, Thomas Rice, River Carruthers, Lidia Rice, Jesse Carruthers, and Michael Rice; his brother, Kenneth Rice; Katherine’s son Cameron Craig, and many beloved friends and relatives.

Ronald loved baseball, crokinole, cribbage, dogs, and, above all, his family and friends. He will be deeply missed and forever loved.

Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home. No visiting hours or funeral by request.

A graveside service will be held Monday June 15th, 2026, at 3:00 PM at Sherwood Cemetery, Charlottetown. Celebration of life will follow the interment at The Local in the Brae room at 4pm.
