Obituary of Margaret Florence Hughes

Peacefully, and surrounded by the love of her family at the Queen Elizabeth Hospital on Wednesday, November 12 ,2025 the death occurred of Margaret Florence Hughes (née Hughes) of Stratford, PE, aged 88 years.

Beloved wife to the late Louis Hughes (July 2023). Loving and devoted mother of Dianne, Jerry (Cathy), and Paul. Treasured grandmother of Shawn (Kerri), Rebecca (Kris), Nicole (Brady), Brent (Taylyn), Joshua, and Joey, and proud great-grandmother of Tate, Scottie, Everett, Jackson, and Lawson.

Margaret will be deeply missed by her brother-in-law John (Mary) Hughes of Stratford, PE, and by many loving nieces and nephews.

The last surviving member of her family, Margaret was predeceased by her parents Thomas and Bertha (Mahar) Hughes, and siblings Bridget Savidant, Thomas, Mary Murphy , Reginald, Herman, Sydella Pye , Leonard, and Cecil.

Margaret was a woman of deep faith and quiet strength. Her spirituality and devotion to God were constants in her life, and she took great comfort in attending Mass.

Above all, Margaret’s greatest joy was her family.  Throughout her 63 years of marriage with Lou, they shared a life rich in simple pleasures: evenings spent playing cards at home or at community halls across the Island, camping at Pine Hills, listening to the Saturday night hoedown, and playing radio bingo together. She found happiness in any moment that brought her family together - cheering at hockey, ringette, and soccer games, attending school recitals, or family gatherings.

Margaret will be remembered for her kindness, warmth, and gentle wisdom. She offered thoughtful advice when asked, especially to her grandchildren, who adored her dearly. She loved shopping outings, watching the birds at her feeder, sharing treats with the family pets—Nina, Kona, and Olive—and long, heartfelt telephone chats. Though she preferred eating sweets to baking them, she was famous for her delicious homemade biscuits.

Margaret’s legacy of love, faith, and family devotion will live on in all who were blessed to know her.
