Obituary of Azalia Mae Matheson
The family of Azalia Mae Matheson announces her peaceful passing, surrounded by immense family love in Charlottetown on Thursday, August 28, 2025, at the age of 89.
A strong, loving, and resilient woman, Azalia devoted her life to her family and community. With a rare blend of empathy, strength, and wisdom, she led by example, a trailblazer in every sense. A skilled lab and x-ray technician and early childhood educator, she balanced her professional life with her deep commitment to children’s education and well-being.
Guided throughout her life by a deep and enduring faith, Azalia established Zion Presbyterian Kindergarten, where her passion for nurturing young minds touched generations. She also gave generously of her time and spirit to Holiday Ranch, creating spaces where children could grow and thrive. Her legacy of compassion, leadership, and dedication to children will live on in all those she inspired.
She was the beloved wife of her late husband and soulmate of 69 years, Rev. Dr. Gordon Johnstone Matheson. Loving mother to Guy Matheson (deceased), Dr. Grant Matheson (Paulette), and Leza Matheson. Cherished grandmother to Angela Matheson (Donald Richards), Janessa Wolters (Michael Arsenault), Emma Matheson, Hannah Matheson, Malek Wolters (Allie), and Jill Matheson. Adored great-grandmother of Sebastian, Eliza, Charlee, Azalia, Willem, and Amelia.
Azalia was predeceased by her parents James and Eliza (Hatcher) Guy, husband Rev. Dr. Gordon Johnstone Matheson, beloved son Gordon Guy Matheson, and her brother Archibald James (Archie) Guy.
Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home, with visiting hours on Sunday, August 31, 2025, from 2–4 p.m. The funeral service will be held at Zion Presbyterian Church, Charlottetown, on Monday, September 1, 2025, at 2 pm. Interment to follow at Calvin Presbyterian Church Cemetery, Mermaid.
In honour of Azalia’s lifelong devotion to children, memorial donations may be made to Oak Acres Children’s Camp.
Her spirit lives on in the hearts of all who knew and loved her, a life of purpose, grace, faith, and unwavering love.
