Obituary of Hilda Josephine Cannon

Peacefully and surrounded by family at the Gillis Lodge on Monday, August 25, 2025, the death occurred of Hilda Josephine Cannon (Gartner), of Pownal, age 101 years.  

Loving mother of Cecelia Doiron (Gordie), Alfred (Linda), Kathy Dowling, Gerard (Shannon), Anthony, Leola MacCulloch (Peter), Christopher (Ellen), Carl (Kat), Paulette Duffy (Brian), Urban (Darlene), Lois Chandler (Paul) and Michelle Burley (Hugh).  Cherished grandmother of 45 grandchildren and 41 great-grandchildren. Hilda will be missed and remembered with love by her siblings Edelbert, Ben, Bill, Isabella Stang, Jerome and by her sisters-in-law Bernadette and Agnes Gartner, and brothers-in-law Ray Kraft and Harold Gutek. Predeceased by her parents Leo and Matilda Gartner; her husband Leo Cannon; siblings Rudy, Edward, Alphonce, Rose Stang, Jack, Otto, Frank, Leonida Kraft and Aloysia Gutek; sisters-in-law Mary, Pauline, Hilda, Barbara, Mary and Charlotte Gartner; brothers-in-law Harry and Mike Stang; son-in-law Ralph Dowling, daughter-in-law Sheila Cannon and grandson Joe Dowling.

The Family would like to extend their thanks and gratitude to the Dr. John Gillis Memorial Lodge Management and Staff, who showed such kindness and compassion to Mom.

Resting at Hillsboro Funeral Home from where visiting hours will be held on Wednesday, September 3, 2025 from 5-8 pm.  A Funeral Mass will be held from St. Joachim’s Church at 10:30 am on Thursday, September 4, 2025, followed by interment in the parish cemetery.
